Stink turned Chic

You all know I've had many many fights with my 4th of July big stinky blue Goodwill chair. Here I am to tell you that we both survived!

Here's how it all went down my friends...

It all started from the moment I saw it. I made Craig crawl over little children to rescue it from the Goodwill platform on 50% off day, the most dreaded day of all at the Goodwill.

Then we kicked and screamed until it squeezed into the back seat of the car.

I had a few moments of peace when I was able to dissect it. The chair was beautifully and professionally upholstered. I was sad to take it apart. Alas, it was stinky. And blue. Adios.

These were interesting. I'm far too lazy to put them back in though.

I took a billion pictures so I knew how the layers fit back in. Hey! There's Michael Scott. Oh I just love you Michael Scott.

Turbo was my trusty companion on the other side of the chair while I was taking apart the back. I tipped him over a few times.

When it was finally all naked (which took me weeks by the way. So many staples!) I covered the good back parts with a garbage bag and painting tape so that I could spray paint.

You MUST prime. I am the laziest person in the world and I even prime. I learned my lesson the hard way. PLUS! This primer color is the best ever. mmm I love it. AND pay more for Rustoleum or else you will die of fumes and uneven paint splotches. I'm warning you. I wear a mask when I am spray painting, and Turbo stays a safe distance in the weeds/grass.

I had a whole plan in mind to paint the chair a chocolate brown and use this luscious light brown goldish fabric. This is where the trouble resumes. You can read about it in this post. Ohhh bad memories.

My reformulation came in the form on choosing a whole different color scheme and making my mom do all the work. I mean, asking my mom to help me. I was in CRISIS mode people!

After my attempt to reupholster this baby without a sewing machine, I realized I needed the queen of sew. So I packed up all the bits and pieces, made sure my pattern pieces from the old fabric were intact (very important) and begged her to sew it all up into one nice package.

I do realize that this doesn't make me the best DIYer...but I count the three weeks of staple removal, 10 trips to fabric stores and and the two paint jobs as my dues.

My Mom and Dad came over bearing gifts:

HOLLLAAA atcha motha!!! She did such a great job sewing the lines. Oh man. All I had to do was finish the arms! I did that over an episode of "Biggest Loser." It was bliss.

Here is the final stinky turned chic chair:

With a little pillow...

Truth be told, my living room is an enormous work in progress. I have no idea where to put anything until I finish all my chairs. So, this beauty will sit here for a while.

Here's a sneak peak at my next chair project. This one is going to be much less trouble :)

Love, love, love! I thought about hitting Goodwill on an upcoming 50% day but I was scared of being trampled. This chair might inspire me to do it!

Great Chair... I just love bargains. My whole house is done by either Craigslist or Goodwill. The only way to go.

Dropping in from Lindsay's Before and After - love your chair, love your part in it and your mom - wow. My mom would KILL me if I sent ANOTHER link to her with ANOTHER recovered chair in it - I'm not kidding - she would kill me.

I never find anything like this in my Goodwill or on Craigslist or even in a store to buy for crying out loud!!

OK - I'm done now - it really looks great and I'm jealous. Maybe I'll just print this out and slip it in her mailbox - she may not know who its from?

Oh my goodness! I have two chairs similar in style but with tan seat and back rest (?). I have been thinking of changing them but using black instead of white --but-- now that I see it in white all I see is chic --I think I have winner! Glad I found your blog!
